Did you know that anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States? According to ADAA, generalized anxiety disorder affects 6.8 million adults, and women are more likely to experience anxiety than men.
You might be wondering, “How do I reduce stress & anxiety throughout the day?” This is especially true if you have a busy work week or feel anxious and tense often.
Try these seven different ways to lower stress and anxiety no matter the time of day.
1. Practice Deep Breathing
One way to reduce stress and anxiety is practicing deep breathing. The breath directly interacts with the body’s nervous system. On the other hand, tension can affect how you breathe and either restrict the breath or speed it up. So, take a deep breath in, hold it for three seconds, and slowly exhale to relax your heart rate.
2. Journal
Are you the type of person who always has a lot on their mind? An overactive brain can prevent the muscles and nerves to fully unwind. In excess, this can even lead to headaches or migraines. Try journaling whenever you feel overwhelmed. I always keep a pen and paper on hand when thought strikes.
3. Use a Fidget Toy
Do you own a fidget spinner like the YOGI? The YOGI fidget spinner is a perfect way to release anxiety and stress. It is also an excellent way to keep the mind occupied and, thus, slow down racing thoughts. This sensory toy is also great for kids with autism or who experience ADHD.
4. Use Positive Affirmations
How we treat ourselves mentally has a huge effect on stress and anxiety. If you are constantly wracking your brain in worrisome and negative thoughts, your stress will only increase. When you catch yourself feeling anxious, try speaking kindly to yourself and reassuring yourself that everything will be ok.
5. Exercise
Exercising might seem like a cure for everything. But it really does help with combating tension or anxiety. Take it from me as someone who has first-hand experience with stress. Working out releases endorphins, which make us feel good. It also stretches muscles to help the body relax.
6. Meditate
Most people think that meditation has to be this long and drawn-out process. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Even meditating for five minutes a day has shown a positive impact on health, mood, and overall wellbeing.
7. Laugh or Smile
This tip is all about tricking the mind into feeling elevated. Laughing and smiling are wonderful for one’s health. It goes hand-in-hand like sunshine and blossoming flowers. The next time you feel tension, curve those lips into a smile. Even if it feels fake at first, you’ll feel something shift within your emotions!
Lightbulb Ideas
Slow down your racing thoughts with the help of Lightbulb Ideas‘ very own fidget toy. Just spin, enjoy, and relax. Which stress reduction activity or method will you be practicing today? Let us know in the comments!
